Online Shopping Website Development Cost: What Moves the Price

What an online shopping website really costs, from build and product entry to payments, delivery and the monthly bill, and how to compare two quotes fairly.

Online shopping website development cost depends on three decisions more than anything else: whether you build on a hosted platform or commission a custom store, how many products and variants you launch with, and which payment and delivery methods you connect. The build is only part of the bill. What you actually need to know is everything you pay until the first order reaches a customer, and what you pay every month after that.

By the end you should be able to write your budget on one page and spot which line a quote leaves out. The most common mistake we see is comparing design price against design price, then discovering after launch that photography, paid apps and payment fees add up to as much as the build itself.

What goes into online shopping website development cost

The cost of building an online shopping website breaks into seven lines, and most quotes mention only two or three of them. Write all seven down before you compare offers, because a missing line does not disappear. It comes back later as a separate invoice.

  • Platform or development: a monthly subscription to a hosted platform, or a one-time build fee for a custom store.
  • Design: an adjusted template, or an interface designed around your brand.
  • Product entry: names, descriptions, sizes, prices and variants, which is manual work that grows with your catalogue.
  • Photography: shooting products, or cleaning up supplier images so they match.
  • Payments and delivery: connecting a payment gateway and a courier, plus the fee on every transaction.
  • Domain and hosting: the store’s name and its yearly renewal, and hosting if the platform does not include it.
  • Content and policies: returns, shipping and privacy pages, plus category descriptions.

An abaya store in Riyadh with fifty designs often spends more on product entry and photography than on the platform itself, because every design has sizes, colours and several angles. A cosmetics shop in Oran that sells on cash on delivery saves on the payment gateway, but pays instead in phone calls to confirm every order before it ships.

How much does it cost to start an online store before the first order

To start an online store you need a launch budget as well as a build budget. A store that works technically but gets no visitors sells nothing, and the first visitors rarely arrive for free.

Put the following in that line: opening stock or a supplier agreement, branded packaging, and a small first ad campaign to test whether the product sells. Add a modest allowance for customer service in the first weeks, since questions arrive on WhatsApp before orders do. Then place real test orders yourself, paying with each method and shipping to more than one city, to confirm that payment, delivery and invoicing work end to end.

That test is cheap, and what it finds before launch costs far more to fix after. A specialty coffee store in Doha that launches an ad before testing a full order may find that delivery fees for some areas never display, and pay for visits that never become orders.

Hosted platform or custom build

A hosted platform is the cheaper start in most cases, because you pay a subscription instead of a development fee. A custom build costs more up front, but you own the code, the design and the data, and you pay no platform commission on each sale.

On a platform, the subscription is the first line of the bill, not the whole bill. On top of it you typically pay for a premium theme if the free one is not enough, and for apps that add features the plan lacks, such as reviews, advanced shipping rules or instalment payments. Some platforms also take a fee per sale on top of the gateway’s fee, depending on the plan. Check each platform’s official pricing page, for example Shopify’s plans, because the figures change.

A custom store makes sense when your needs go beyond what platforms handle well: wholesale and retail prices side by side, a link to an inventory or ERP system, or a product page that works differently from the standard template. A date producer in Al Qassim selling to both households and cafés is the textbook case. For a store selling twenty products at one price to everyone, a custom build at the start is spending you do not need. You can see what a custom build includes on our ecommerce development service page.

Payments, delivery and invoicing by market

What you connect depends on where you sell, and each connection is a line in the build cost and often a fee per order. The same store costs different amounts to launch in Riyadh, Doha and Algiers because the checkout is different in each.

In Saudi Arabia, shoppers expect mada, Apple Pay and an instalment option such as Tamara or Tabby. VAT-registered stores also need electronic invoices that meet the requirements of the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority, which is easier to build in from the start than to add later. In Qatar, a store usually needs local and international cards, Apple Pay, and Arabic and English side by side for a mixed customer base.

In Algeria, most buyers pay cash on delivery, so the order form, phone confirmation and courier integration matter more than the gateway. Card payment through Edahabia or CIB requires a merchant account and an agreement with an approved provider before any development starts. Each of these markets has its own documents to prepare, so start the approval process in parallel with the build rather than after it.

Online store development costs after launch

After launch, four costs keep coming back: the subscription or hosting, payment fees on every transaction, domain renewal, and maintenance. Most people budget for the first and forget the other three.

Payment fees are a percentage of each sale and vary by gateway and card type, so they grow with your revenue. That is why a store with high sales cares more about the fee rate than about the subscription price. Maintenance means updating extensions, fixing what breaks when a courier changes its API, and keeping the store fast on mobile, where most orders come from.

In Algeria the monthly picture is different again. With cash on delivery, the biggest recurring cost is delivery, including the orders customers refuse at the door. A store in Sétif that ships a hundred orders and gets some back pays delivery both ways on those parcels, and that belongs on the budget sheet.

Using an online store development cost calculator

An online store development cost calculator gives you a first estimate in minutes, provided you answer its questions with your real launch scope rather than your plans for next year. Treat the result as a range to bring to a conversation, not as a quote.

Before you open one, write down the number of products you will launch with, the payment methods your customers ask for today, the courier that serves their cities, and whether you need a second language from day one. A Qatari store selling to residents usually needs English alongside Arabic, and an Algerian store often needs French. With those answers you can get a first estimate from our website cost calculator, and see our starting prices in your currency on the pricing page.

How to compare two quotes

Compare quotes by sending every vendor the same written brief: number of products and variants, pages you need, payment and delivery methods, languages, and who enters the products. When everyone answers the same brief, the price difference becomes a difference in quality or scope, and you can ask about it.

Then ask each vendor for three things in writing: what the quote includes, what it excludes, and what happens after launch. The third answer separates quotes more than the price does, because a store that breaks a month after launch with nobody to fix it costs more than any saving you made at the start. Our own quotes include a 30-day warranty covering technical defects and 3 months of free maintenance after launch. For broader criteria on choosing the vendor itself, see how to choose a web development agency.

Frequently asked questions

Is a hosted platform always cheaper than a custom store?

In the first year, usually yes, because you pay no development fee. The picture changes as sales grow and subscriptions, apps and commissions accumulate, or when you need a feature the platform does not support. Compare the two over three years, not over the first month.

How long does it take to build an online store?

It depends on the number of products and integrations. Most of our projects launch within two to four weeks of kickoff, and larger stores can take longer. The longest part is often on the merchant’s side: preparing photos, descriptions and the paperwork for payment approval.

Can I start small and expand later?

Yes, and it is what we recommend to most first-time sellers. Launch with your best-selling products and one payment and delivery method per market, then add what customers ask for. Choose a platform or architecture from the start that lets you export your data if you move later.

Who owns the store once it is built?

That should be written into the contract. With us, the code, design and content become the client’s on full payment, so you can keep working with us or take the store to any other team. Ask every vendor the same question and get the answer in writing.

Your budget on one page before the first quote

The decision to take away: write your online shopping website development cost as three numbers, build, launch until the first order, and the monthly cost over a full year, then choose a platform or a custom store based on the third number rather than the first. If you would like us to review your numbers and tell you which path fits your size, request a free quote with no obligation.
