Case study A community platform for Algerian builders

Kayen: a community for Algerian builders

How we built a community platform where Algerian builders post what they are building, with one promise: at least one substantive comment on every launch within 48 hours.

The Kayen interface as it appears at kayen.dev

01 The idea

Real feedback for those building in Algeria

We wanted one place where Algerian builders post what they are building, founders, developers, freelancers, students and those in the diaspora alike, so that people who build the same way read it and answer with real feedback.

Its name comes from an everyday Algerian question, “wach kayen?”, and the platform is its answer. At its heart is a single promise: every launch gets a substantive comment within 48 hours, which, as the platform itself says, is the only reason it exists.

02 The build

What we built

A community platform, not a single page: a public feed, project pages, guides, and an admin dashboard behind them.

  • A feed with four kinds of post

The home page is the feed itself: launch, question, news and milestone. There is no downvote, and comments branch into replies.

  • The 48 hour promise

Every launch carries a badge counting its substantive comments until the promise is kept, and beside the feed, the number of launches it was kept for and the slots left this week.

  • A permanent page for every project

Every launch creates a page for its project that outlasts it. The directory also holds 43 verified Algerian startups, their pages ready and waiting for their owners to claim them.

  • Weekly rituals

An open discussion on Monday, jobs and freelancers on Wednesday, Feedback Friday, and a demo day every month, with a strip beside the feed to remind everyone.

  • A library of guides

12 guides written for builders, some of them also in French and English.

  • A charter and a reputation

A charter of five rules, the first of them “critique the work, not the person”, and reputation points and badges beside every member's name.

03 The decisions

How we built it

  1. 01 We started from a ready base The first step in its history brought over the base of Made in Algeria, our other project, as its starting point, so the time went into the community, not into the foundations.
  2. 02 Arabic first The whole interface is in Arabic and reads right to left, and the charter corrects no one's language: Darja, Arabic, French and English are all welcome.
  3. 03 A promise sized to what we can keep We capped the guarantee at five launch slots a week, so the 48 hour promise stays something the community actually keeps.
  4. 04 An identity without ornament The logo is a speech bubble with a command line prompt inside: conversation and code. The word was drawn, not typeset, the logo was gathered into an identity kit, and the interface was left without glow or stock images.

From its history

  1. Building starts on the Made in Algeria base
  2. The logo, the identity kit and dark mode
  3. The first real launches in the feed
  4. The current release in production

Where it stands today

Kayen runs in production, where real members post their launches, questions and news, and we are the ones who build it and run it.
